Message from Chief Executive
With the well-being of fellow countrymen at heart, the Hong Kong AIDS Foundation (The Foundation) began to expand its work across the border in 1996, helping the mainland accelerate its response to HIV/AIDS. Over the years, the Foundation has been offering capacity building and technical support to mainland AIDS workers. To strengthen collaboration with mainland colleagues on HIV/AIDS prevention, the Foundation, together with Chinese Association of STD/AIDS Prevention and Control, set up a Collaboration Centre in Beijing in November 2007.
Upon the completion of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge, there will be more frequent exchanges between Hong Kong and the Mainland, and also more and more cross border activities near the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Bay Area. However, according to the statistics from the Health Commission of Guangdong Province, it was noteworthy that there were a total of 60,324 cases of HIV/AIDS (24,147 reported cases of AIDS) infection in Guangdong Province as at 31 October 2018, ranked the fourth place nationwide. Furthermore, we would like to express our deep concerns that the number of new infected cases of HIV and AIDS registered from January 2018 to October 2018 had reached 6,262 and 2,749 respectively, representing 1.0% and 4.1% increase over the same period in 2017.
In this regard, starting 2018, the Foundation will shift our focus back to the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Bay Area. We will actively look for cooperative opportunities (i.e. the provision of capacity building & technical support, and funding programmes for desperate NGOs) with frontline counterparts (i.e. NGOs and CDCs) based in the Greater Bay Area. AIDS identifies no boundaries and with the Government of the HKSAR’s recent calling for joint efforts to strengthen Hong Kong’s participation with cities such as Shangzhen, Zhuhai, etc., the Foundation has no excuse to avoid a closer relationship with our counterparts in these neighboring regions.
Finally, we need your participation as our sponsors, donors or volunteers. Your every involvement is so vital to us!
Ms. Eris, S.S. Lau
The Chief Executive, The Hong Kong AIDS Foundation
